Nicaraguan Vos

So, a lot of people always tell me that they don’t understand how Im conjugating my verbs in spanish. Well, here’s the deal: Im from Nicaragua and we dont use the pronoun “tu”, we use “vos”. First of all, vos and vosotros are 2 totally different things. Vos (voseo) is second person singular and Vosotros is plural!! I dont speak using vosotros (make a note of that)!!

“Vos” is the dominant second person singular pronoun used by many speakers in familiar or informal contexts. Voseo is most commonly used among people in the same age group in addressing one another. It is common to hear young children address each other with “vos.” The phenomenon also occurs among adults who address one another in familiar or informal contexts. “Vos” is also used by adults in addressing children or juveniles. However, the relationship does not re-occur when children address adults. Children address adults with “usted;” regardless of age, status or context.

Vos has traditionally not been used in formal writing, except in Argentina and Uruguay. This gradually changed in Central America, where even the most prestigious media networks and press began to use the pronoun vos reflecting the informal address in Spanish as opposed to the formal address of usted. This is particularly true in Nicaragua and to a similar but lesser extent in Costa Rica, Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador who all speak a Central American Spanish.

Also, vos is akin to the word thou. Wow!! So Im speaking like Im in a Shakespearean play. Add that to my resume of Awesomeness!!!
